Helping Families to Make Informed Health Care Decisions

Health Education, Advocacy, & Literacy (H.E.A.L.) is a professional consulting organization that helps individuals and families make health choices that work for them. H.E.A.L.'s mission is twofold: to support, inform and empower people caring for children, and to reform the role of health care in the lives of individuals and in our society at large.

Our focus is on issues considered controversial or hard to address in the standard medical community. These include home birth, long term breastfeeding, decisions related to immunization and circumcision, emotional/behavioral issues and school problems, and antibiotic abuse. We applaud the declining incidence of newborn circumcision and want to ensure that parents have clear information about circumcision. We are strongly opposed to the use of psychotropic medications (antidepressants, stimulants like Ritalin, etc.) in children, and we want to support families that decide not to medicate and are facing pressure to do so.

We provide individual consult services to families wishing to discuss anything concerning the health of infants, children and adolescents. This includes well child and acute care (sick visit) services, as well as home visits. We also provide counseling and psychotherapy services to families and people of all ages,  educational workshops to parents, caregivers and groups, and we are available for public speaking engagements. Take a look at what we have to offer and see how you can benefit by unplugging from the profit-driven medical industrial complex.

Doctor and Kid - Contact us or visit our Magnolia, Texas, health care consulting office for information on breastfeeding, immunizations, home births, and alternative health care topics.

Did you know that HEAL is now working in conjunction with BIRTH (www.houbirth.org), The Real School Co-Op (www.therealschoolhouston.org) and a number of local activists and Green Party members? We have formed Alliance for Cooperative Transformation (ACT) Houston (www.actnowhouston.com). We have cooperatively purchased a building, 2805 Wichita, Houston, 77004. We invite others to come on board as both owners and members. Take a look at the website and consider joining us or contributing in any way that you can.

Know Your Options, Make an Informed Decision
We offer treatment and referral services in the context of individual consults, but we do not offer hospital based services, and we do not guarantee the availability of any service.  H.E.A.L.'s director, Dr. Krenie Stowe, is a pediatrician with over 20 years of clinical experience.

Rayford Medical & Urgent Care Clinic in The Woodlands does have 24 hour a day phone access, extended hours, on site lab and hospital privileges, but Dr. Stowe is just one member of that group.

Take a look at our learning community for unschoolers, self-directed youth and anyone who wants to support their child's inherent desire and ability to learn free of coercion and control. It is called The Real School a.k.a. Dragon Valley. We will begin our seventh  'school' year in September. There will be ongoing dialogs throughout the year to discuss radically different educational models.
