Alliance for Cooperative Transformation Houston

Alliance for Cooperative Transformation (ACT) Houston (www.actnowhouston.com) is a grassroots cooperative committed to supporting deinstitutionalization, liberation, and empowerment. ACT Houston intends to provide a physical space where activists, entrepreneurs and community groups can meet, organize, outreach and grow through pooling resources and sharing ideas while remaining autonomous. ACT Houston highlights our need for community, connection and collaboration. One need not subscribe to a particular philosophy to participate.  Mutual respect, empathy and critical thoughtfulness are guidelines for involvement.

Individuals or groups can participate as owners by buying into ACT Houston or as simple members by paying a small monthly fee. Investors will be granted proportional ownership as well as 1 hour of use monthly for each $1,000 invested. $1,500 is the minimum investment and that can be paid gradually or in a lump sum. Members will also have hourly monthly use. Additionally, the co-op will provide affordable rental space to owners and members that need ongoing daily use of the physical plant. To date those tenants include HEAL (Health Education, Advocacy & Literacy/ www.healthedadlit.com), The Real School/Dragon Valley (www.therealschoolhouston.org), BIRTH (www.houbirth.org) and midwife Pat Jones. Revenue from rent and membership fees will be used to sustain the physical plant. Tenants who are not owners will have an opportunity to gradually buy in as owners.

ACT Houston had its first meeting just over 1 year ago. We are legally incorporated,  have raised over $125,000 and have purchased a building in 3rd Ward. Rehab is  complete (although the building is an elder, and rehab is a bit of an ongoing process). We are actively seeking 3-5 additional owner/investors and also members. The building is in regular use by HEAL, BIRTH and The Real School Co-Op. We are also housing the amazing library of Sedition Books!

The major priority now is raising funds to purchase 7,500 SF of land that sits adjacent to the building and possibly another contiguous lot behind the building.

Those who wish to support our mission but do not have an interest in ownership may make a donation to ACT Houston or a tax deductible donation in any amount to  BIRTH, a 501 c(3) tax exempt organization. The Real School in in the process of applying for independent tax exempt status. Both organizations are ACT Houston owner/investors.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
