Helping Families to Make Informed Health Care Decisions

Health Education, Advocacy, & Literacy (H.E.A.L.) is a professional consulting organization that helps individuals and families make health choices that work for them. H.E.A.L.'s mission is two-fold: to support, inform and empower people caring for children, and to reform the role of health care in the lives of individuals and in our society at large.

Our focus is on issues considered controversial or hard to address in the standard medical community. These include home birth, long term breastfeeding, decisions related to immunization and circumcision, emotional/behavioral issues and school problems, and antibiotic abuse. We are strongly opposed to the use of psychotropic medications (antidepressants, stimulants like Ritalin, etc.) in children, and we want to support families that decide not to medicate and are facing pressure to do so.

We provide individual consult services to families wishing to discuss anything concerning the health of infants, children and adolescents. This includes well child and acute care (sick visit) services, as well as home visits. We also provide counseling and psychotherapy services to families and people of all ages,  educational workshops to parents, caregivers and groups, and we are available for public speaking engagements. Take a look at what we have to offer and see how you can benefit from thinking outside the health care box.

Pediatrics 101

started as a 3 hour workshop for parents and caregivers addressing common pediatric health questions; is has now grown to an ongoing series. We discuss anything and everything related to the health and well being of young people. The next meeting will be on

Sunday July 19th from 1-4pm

at

1525 E. 32nd 1/2 St., Houston, 77022.

The  workshop in July will be a new one called

The Problem with School

I will breifly review the history of mass compulsory schooling and the free and democratic school and unschooling movements; I will then address what I call the 3 pronged attack on children by health care professionals, the pharmaceutical industry and one-size-fits all schools. I will examine the ways in which these 3 players pathologize young people, violate individual rights and undermine real learning. Finally, aternatives and solutions will be considered. This is a participatory workshop; active participation is encouraged. Call or email if you would like to register, or just stop by

We offer treatment and referral services in the context of individual consults, but we do not offer hospital based services, and we do not guarantee the availability of any service.  H.E.A.L.'s director, Dr. Krenie Stowe, is a pediatrician with 20 years of clinical experience.

The Maternal & Family Clinic in The Woodlands does have 24 hour a day phone access, extended hours, on site lab and x-ray, and hospital privileges, but Dr. Stowe is just one member of that group.

Take a look at our learning community for unschoolers, self-directed youth and anyone who wants to support their child's inherent desire and ability to learn free of coersion and control.
